The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to men and women in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Once a year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was thrilled to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, originally from Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil experienced a major stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and it left his left leg majorly impaired, causing foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would ultimately end up permanently in a wheelchair.
No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, putting financial pressure on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. They became optimistic when Adil was introduced to the WalkAid System, a device that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help a person with foot drop walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they were not able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.
Thankfully, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the generous grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
