What NATE Certification is and Why it Matters

November 08, 2016

Sunbeam Service Experts in Buffalo always tells you about how our service techs are NATE-certified, and while it sounds encouraging, what does it truly mean?

NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence and, as mentioned on their website, is the nation’s largest certification organization for HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) and refrigeration technicians. The organization was developed by and has been supported by the entire HVAC and refrigeration industry but not all people in the industry are required to be certified through NATE. The certification is optional and technicians can service heating, cooling, ventilation, and refrigeration equipment without being NATE-certified.

It’s important to Sunbeam Service Experts that our experts are NATE-certified to ensure we are sending the most qualified and skilled technicians into your home. To make sure technicians meet these standards, the NATE-certification exams validate real-world working knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems for technicians. The tests are knowledge-based tests that assess the technician’s knowledge of these criteria.

Since Sunbeam Service Experts focuses on the HVAC side of NATE-certification (not refrigeration), there are only certain areas applicable to our technicians. NATE exam candidates may receive installation and/or service certification in one or more of the talent areas listed below:

  • Air Conditioning
  • Air Distribution
  • Gas Heating

  • Heat Pumps
  • Hydronics Gas (service only)
